This series consists of black-and-white photographic prints taken in 1908, the first year of Admiral Peary's successful expedition to the North Pole. The images are mounted in an album that was disassembled by the National Archives. There are no captions for any of the photographs. Among the photographs in the series are numerous waterscapes, some showing waterways strewn with icebergs and ice floes, and numerous landscapes of barren terrain. Many images are panoramas. Also included are views of sparsely populated coastal communities and dwellings (XP-XPL-5a and XP-XPL-5a XP-XPL-5b; XP-XPL-26b; and XP-XPL-31a XP-XPL-31b). There are also a few photographs of camp sites (XP-XPL-8c; XP-XPL-4a; XP-XPL-23b; and XP-XPL-27b). Several of the photographs are of a ship powered by steam and sail. Although no identification is given or can be seen on the ship itself, the vessel is probably the Roosevelt (XP-XPL-7b; XP-XPL-7d; and XP-XPL-17a). The Roosevelt was used to transport the expedition members and served as the base of operations. Included are photographs taken on board the ship showing explorers dining (XP-XPL-14b and XP-XPL-14c). Also of note is an image of what may be a religious service aboard the ship (XP-XPL-15b). There are also numerous photographs are native peoples, many of whom are shown on board the ship (XP-XPL-2c; XP-XPL-3a; XO-XPL-8a and XP-XPL-8b; and XP-XPL-15c). Peary recruited quite a few native men, women, and children to support the expedition. Admiral Peary (XP-XPL-4a), his assistant Matthew Henson (XP-XPL-4d), and Ross Marvin, the chief expedition assistant (XP-XPL-16b) are pictured in this series. Professor Marvin was the only explorer to die during the trip.

Robert Edwin Peary Sr. (born May 6, 1856, Cresson, Pennsylvania – died February 20, 1920, Washington, D.C.) was an American explorer and United States Navy officer who made several expeditions to the Arctic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
